Lyndon B. Johnson: Family Life

Both of the Johnson children, Lynda and Luci, were married during their father's presidency, one of them in a White House ceremony. With the war overseas, the Johnson family cut back on the lavish entertaining that had been a hallmark of John Kennedy’s administration. There were occasional barbecues at the White House, but most social occasions were used to elicit political support. Johnson's Texas ranch provided the real refuge from the pressures of office, and the family retreated there often, where Johnson could be seen driving the dusty ranch roads in a large Lincoln Continental convertible or relaxing on long walks.
